( “HOW DID IT COME TO BE IN 2 LOCATIONS and WHY McLaren VALE and WOODEND?

One of the biggest factors for the “birth” of this new community Band-based music club venture is the amazing success of the Tatachilla Lutheran College’s Performing Arts productions of “The Sound of Music” and the Christmas Carols by Candlelight last year.

Calls went out to parents and the general community to volunteer to sing and/or play an instrument to supplement the students’ efforts in both of these productions.

Well... the response was wonderful and when I heard that over 30 musicians came out of the woodwork, so to speak; I realized what a fantastic resource of talent and skill there was on the central Fleurieu Peninsula.

I asked myself... “Why wait until next Christmas to get these musicians together? Why don’t I start a club that will offer opportunities to adults who can play an instrument but have nowhere to go and play it locally”.

I spoke with Greg John who had been part of the team at Tatachilla and he thought there was a genuine need and he encouraged me to give it a go. Linking schools and communities in this type of way is so beneficial to all concerned as well as the wider community. Also, the College has a great performing arts program and music students may want a community based band/ ensemble to be part of out of school hours or when they leave school.

(Having started the Central Eyre Concert Band at Cleve on the central Eyre Peninsula in 1992, I knew the value and enjoyment young and older people alike can have playing popular music together as well as performing to the public.)                         Coast___Vines02040202020203

Why 2 sites? The price of petrol is the main reason. There are many musicians across the Fleurieu; which is a huge geographical area that includes at least 3 large Councils. So for them to travel many, many kilometres for a band rehearsal nowadays is just too expensive. So I came up with the idea of 2 locations that are 20 km apart, yet can service the Hallett Cove, O’Halloran Hill. Aberfoyle Park end of the Fleurieu, as well as McLaren Vale, Mt Compass, Willunga, Aldinga, Seaford part of the Fleurieu.

HOW could this be done on a Friday night for both sites?... Answer: Fortnightly. I make it a low commitment club with, attendance as people can manage in their busy lifestyles. Hence the start of something quite unique and after 4 months, we have nearly 20 players who come along quite regularly and have a great time playing tunes at about Grade 2+ which we are now performing out in the wider community.

Thanks Greg John for your ideas, support and inspiration plus what you and your fellow teachers and staff are helping to make happen at Tatachilla for students , parents, family members and the broader community via the Performing Arts.” )

Sonia notified the South Australian Band Association of her intentions early in 2006, and from small beginnings, the group plans to cater for musicians of all ages who play Flute, Clarinet, Sax, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba Bassoon, Oboe, Percussion; ie a “Concert Band” style, as there is a need for a musical organization on the

Fleurieu Peninsula which is family orientated, has a friendly, inclusive ethos and has a priority of contributing to the communities in the region via public performances.
‘It’s an opportunity to bring along your instrument, a music stand and your own ideas in this exciting new music venture for the Fleurieu region’, Sonia said.
The initial public planing session was held on Friday 7th April and after that there will be a number of further planning sessions (which will all include a “blow” to try out some of the 200+ band arrangements Sonia has in her personal music library)
Bookings are constantly coming in for small and large ensembles which Sonia has started to form, which include;- Woodwind Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Swing Band, Cabaret Band, Jazz/Dixie Band and whatever evolves.

July has seen the first of the smaller ensembles to evolve(Brass); so bookings can be considered for these as well as the main Club Band
